NSRA - National Sprint Racing Association

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What horses are eligible to race?

Strict government probity requirements relating to the conduct of horse racing with wagering mean all horses must be fully identified and issued with Racehorse Identity Papers.  To ensure the required high standards are maintained the NSRA has recognised

  • the Arabian Horse Society,
  • Australian Quarter Horse,
  • Australian Appaloosa,
  • Paint Horse Association,
  • Australian Stock Horse; and,
  • Thoroughbred and Non Thoroughbred Stud Books

Each of these studbooks is internationally recognised and DNA tested which will ensure the ARQ meets government requirements relating to probity.

How do I obtain Racehorse Identity Papers for my horse?

Horses will NOT be eligible to race in NSRA sanctioned racing after 1 August 2006 without valid NSRA identity papers and interstate based horses will need an NSRA appoved stewards clearance before racing.

Do I need to Register as a Trainer, Jockey or Strapper?

Trainers, Jockeys and Strappers are required to be licensed under the Rules of Racing.  Licensed Participants from other racing codes eg Thoroughbreds, will also be eligible to participate in ARQ activities including race riding and training.

Industry participants should be aware that strict access standards are enforced on race tracks and persons not wearing recognised identity cards will be refused access to race day stalls, saddling enclosure, jockey room etc.

Arrangements are already in place with the Queensland Racing Board and Racing Victoria for licensed TB personnel to participate in alternate racing under certain conditions which means there should not be a shortage of jockeys or trainers.

Does NSRA Licensing or Identity Recording apply Nationally?

Yes any licensing or identity recording with the NSRA is acceptable in NSRA sanctioned racing in all States and Territories of Australia. Several states are in the process of introducing some form of alternate racing on TB tracks and  the NSRA is working with these organisations and jurisdictions to  encouraging the introduction of nationally consistent rules and administrative procedures for the introduction of alternate racing codes on Australian TB race tracks.

The ARQ is an example of industry participants in several States working together to move the industry forward.
